Firstly, welcome to ‘Roxanne First’ – I hope you like my new website. I can’t tell you how happy I am that it is up and running, it’s been a long journey.
I never imagined writing a ‘blog’ (it feels quite self-indulgent) however an amazing lady that I have been closely working with told me it was a good idea to increase my ‘SEO’. But also, and maybe more importantly, a little insight into my world – the girl behind the brand, I guess.
This blog is called ‘Rocky’s Road’ as my best pals call me Rocky and I am into it and ‘Road’ – well that’s pretty self-explanatory. I also realise it is a delicious biscuit – I hope this works in my favour. I hope these little instalments provide for some interesting reading, and hopefully provide a deeper look into the world of fine jewellery, how to create your own jewellery wardrobe, different ways of wearing pieces, investing in modern heirlooms, understanding more about diamonds and semi-precious stones and everything in-between.
In history, humans have always loved to be adorned with jewels, which led to jewellery developing as an industry. The Greeks started using gold and gems in jewellery as early as 1600 BC, although beads shaped as shells and animals were produced widely in earlier times. Jewellery is an ornament, for personal adornment. The word ‘jewellery’ is an anglicized form of the Latin word, ‘jocale’ which means plaything (how cute is that?).
My history in jewellery began with diamonds, oogling at any I could get my hands on. They have been an obsession of mine since I was tiny, I know we all love a bit of bling but I am on another level. Seriously. I am, however, a little late to the game, as my first 10 years were spent in luxury marketing and branding and although it was great experience, I wish I had entered the fine jewellery world earlier. However, I often remind myself that J.K Rowling started her Harry Potter Empire at 32, Martha Stewart published her first book at 41 and Oprah signed her syndication deal (which led to The Oprah Winfrey Show) at 33. Just shows you – it really is never too late.
I wanted to start ‘Roxanne First’ as I wanted to design and create jewellery that was beautiful (and fun to wear) but also accessible. Don’t get me wrong, I have come across some amazing pieces of jewellery in my time - in shops and online but never really understood the high price tag - for those little sparkly trinkets. Especially as these days – more is more. We don’t just wear one hoop, we wear 4. Gone are the days of a single necklace, I am currently wearing 3. My mother was actually nicknamed Mr T for that very reason.
As if by magic, I met a business partner, with over 40 years of manufacturing (and diamond sourcing) experience and ‘Roxanne First’ was born (I mean I wish it had been that easy, but I don’t want to bore you).
Right now, I am going to be selling online (and will have some lovely pop ups now and then) – which allows us to be fair with our pricing (by keeping overheads to a minimum). Also, by not working on a wholesale basis, we both win. You are more than welcome to come and visit the studio too.
It’s been a real journey so far (and I am only just launching), the highs are high but the lows are seriously low. I have learnt so much and continue to do so – I owe so much to my family and friends who have been the most amazing support. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. A million times over.
I hope you like (well, love) my playthings – I hope they make you happy, whether you buy them for you or as a gift, I hope they hold a memory for you and is the start of a sparkling collection.
Happy Browsing (and hopefully shopping).
